R. Nagel B.V. Transportbedrijf: Actively engaging drivers to achieve driver behaviour improvements
As one of Route42’s oldest clients Nagel has taken an interesting approach to improving driver behaviour. Being a logistics and transport company that is based at an airport they deal with a specific reality that is not often faced by other logistics and transport companies. A reality that brings with it, its own set of driver behaviour problems.
\nJaap Van Vliet, driver coach at Nagel uses Route42’s driver behaviour solutions to gain oversight and seek to improve his drivers. The Nagel fleet of trucks handles and distributes air freight and goods that require temperature control on a daily basis.
\nNagel started their journey with Route42 with a small pilot project in cooperation with TVM. Starting with 4 fully equipped trucks, including dashcam and eye tracking cameras which were visible to the drivers, and 4 trucks which had tracking equipment but no visual element that a driver could identify.
\nWhile driver behaviour improved, it became evident very quickly that the best long term solution for driver behaviour improvement, was to engage the drivers directly, giving them direct access to their own data and driving scores.
\nOnce the pilot project was over, Nagel took the decision to further their relationship with Route42 and to expand installation of equipment to all the trucks in their fleet. Nagel approached Route42 and the decision was taken to provide Nagel with driver behaviour telematics equipment. Today all Nagel drivers have access to their own driving profile via a smartphone application.
\n“The way Route42 presents driver behaviour data makes it easy to coach drivers. Route42 tools provide data that is presented in a clear understandable way, with visual elements that make situations clearer for both drivers and driver coaching. Our aim is to make sure that all our drivers are keen about the system and proactively watching and seeking to improve their own driving behaviour.”
\nBack office and instructor drivers take an active role in coaching and teaching their drivers the benefits of Route42’s driver behaviour system, and how to save fuel and improve their behaviour while on the road. Nagel understands that their driver’s safety is their priority and seeks to make this the company’s priority at all levels. From a business perspective Nagel sees their drivers as their ambassador on the road. Therefore, a well maintained, undamaged truck will not only save the company money but also ensure that the social image being presented is a positive one.
\nThanks to Nagel’s thoroughness and use of Route42’s driver behaviour applications Nagel is able to maintain and improve their reputation within the community. Route42 has provided Nagel with the right tool to achieve these goals. Van Vliet says “We have not quantified the savings we have made so far using Route42’s telematics solutions. However even if we make a minimal 5% saving on fuel and costs related to damage, the investment is worth making. We would recommend the Route42 driver behaviour system to any company seeking improvements.”
